The Protea Library

The Protea Library at Walmer Estate Primary School is ready to be opened to learners as soon as the restrictions related to COVID-19 allow. The Library will be managed by a full time librarian - supported by the Otto Foundation Team. The Protea Library librarian would assist in conceptualising and implementing literacy, reading and writing programmes for our whole cluster of schools in Zonnebloem/ District Six.

The Library is used to :

  • Foster a culture of reading at Walmer Estate Primary School,

  • Develop learners’ research skills,

  • Host gatherings and provide an inspiring space for engagement for learners, teachers and the school community, and

  • Promote proudly local children's literature.

We are incredibly grateful to the Kamvalethu Foundation who partnered with us to fund the establishment of the Protea Library at Walmer Estate Primary School.

A carefully designed and well-stocked library can be a space from which to inspire a love of reading, a desire to learn and a curiosity to explore new facts, thoughts and ideas. We hope that the Protea Library will be a place of wonder for the learners of Walmer Estate Primary School and will be a resource that the school could be proud of.

How can you help us

  • Authors - get in touch to come and read your books to our learners, or to launch your new book in our library.

  • Publishers - let us know about new books that we could add to our catalogue. We are always looking for local titles to purchase.

  • Other schools - visit us at the Protea Library, or bring your older learners to come and read to our Foundation Phase classes.

  • #WC Reading Champions and Inspiration partners - please share your ideas on how to promote a culture of reading, or visit our library to brainstorm ideas with our team.

  • All friends of the Protea Library - reach out to us if you are able to co-ordinate a book donation drive or other fundraiser on our behalf.

  • Literacy organisations - contact us to use the Protea Library as a venue for your next gathering or training session.

  • Donors - we are always looking for like-minded partners to help us finance the operational expenses of the library or to fund new book purchases.

to imagine a future with infinite possibilities, and equip them with the skills that they will need to build that future”.
